Today's Random™ Question

Question: Why do some people like to call places like Orchard Road, Bugis, etc, town?

Well, I'm not sure why. But I pondered over that question before. I mean, in my own definition, a city is like more developed than town areas like Woodlands, Marsiling or Yishun, have high buildings, hotels, plenty of shopping centers and etc. Then why do people still call city areas, town?

Here's a definition of what a city is...

1. the City - the major metropolitan center of a region; downtown: e.g I'm going to the City to buy clothes and see a show.

2. a large or important town

Now, there's even an example sentence for people to read. LOL. But you see the first definition. It says downtown and of a major metropolitan center of a region. Not just town. And the second one says a city is a large or important town NOT just a town. So you say that Orchard road is either downtown or a city. NOT TOWN.

Here's a definition of what a town is...

1. a thickly populated area, usually smaller than a city and larger than a village, having fixed boundaries and certain local powers of government.

2. a densely populated area of considerable size, as a city or borough.

Now, the first one compares a town to a city but it is smaller. It then is compared to a village but it is larger. Thus, one cannot say that Orchard Road or Bugis etc, is called a TOWN. It is like calling a female cow a bull.

LOL. I simply love to exaggerate.

But I really do wonder why teenagers nowadays like to call those places town. Shouldn't they be saying downtown or city? Then if Orchard Road is called town, would places like Yishun, Yio Chu Kang or even Ang Mo Kio be called city? LOL.

But of course, I being myself, would not call those places town when I want to visit them. I would just simply say their names. Why cause the shame if you think the other way? LOLs. Nevermind... Someday then...

So in conclusion, why do people nowadays like to call places like Orchard Road, Bugis, etc, town? Simple.

1. They are not sure what is the difference between a town and city.
2. They get influenced by other people.
3. They simply call it what other people do.
4. They are lazy to say downtown and thus say town.

Or simply whatever reasons you could think of. But please, ponder over it. LOL. I'm not like trying to start a conundrum or anything.

p.s. LOL. I'm like answering in an S.S format! Eeeeeeeeeeeeee! Ahahaha!
